Future growth: Rapid growth is predicted for careers in Health and Community Services fueled by an ageing population and increasing consumer demands. Expansion is anticipated in diagnostic services, allied health, complementary and alternative health services, childcare, aged and community support services.
Widespread skills shortages: current skills shortages exist in many areas (nurses, child care, medical specialists, health technicians for example). Vocational qualifications can facilitate excellent entry-level career opportunities, assisting the transition to professional and / or higher education roles.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the workforce: health care provided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is an important strategy to improve the health and life expectancy of Indigenous people. There is a need to build the workforce and attract more young Indigenous people with proactive marketing and transition strategies.
Work experience gives students the opportunity to develop a more informed opinion about their possible career options.
Work placement is for students who are undertaking a vocational course as part of their secondary school studies and require a practical placement. The practical placement usually involves students undertaking specific tasks for which they are assessed as competent, or otherwise.
What employers can gain from taking students on work experience or work placements- Young people become interested in Health and Community Services work
- Interested young people can meet future recruitment needs and reduce concerns about the ageing workforce
- Employers have the opportunity to assess the potential of young people for future employment
Help from local community partnerships
Local Community Partnerships (LCPs) facilitate connections between students and employers and in addition, form partnerships with other important stakeholders such as schools and parents. Their overall role is to facilitate access to career information, advice, and training.
